Urban rates are higher.

Costs that must NOT be taken from the estate

The following expenses are not the responsibility of the estate. They may only be funded from the shares of consenting heirs — provided ALL heirs are adults of sound mind; not permitted if any heir is a minor or lacks capacity.

  • Token payment / fee for the funeral prayer
  • Fees for Quran recitation, tahlil & prayers for the deceased
  • Memorial feasts & guest catering (3rd, 7th, 40th, 100th day)
  • Token payment for the imam's talkin recitation
  • Headstones, canopies & structures or decorations over the grave
  • Tent, chair & equipment rental for condolence guests
  • Heirs' travel & accommodation expenses
  • Charity on behalf of the deceased (except via a bequest, limited to 1/3)

Important notes

  • Order of applying the estate: (1) funeral management expenses, (2) the deceased's debts, (3) bequests up to 1/3, (4) faraid to the heirs.
  • Funeral expenses must be moderate and reasonable relative to the deceased's standard of living — without extravagance or incurring debt.
  • If the entire cost is covered by khairat kematian or donations, no deduction is made from the estate.
  • For reference only. For specific cases, consult the mufti's office / estate administrator.
